The focus of this position is to ensure all IT database systems run optimally, to maintain performance and availability in line with agreed KPI’s and to handle incidents and requests in adherence to agreed SLA’s. The position will require you to administer computer systems, and make sure they’re secure and working properly. You will be exposed to a vast array of enterprise technologies and bespoke applications for which release and configuration management is integral to the role in accordance with change management procedures. It therefore requires a confident, logical individual with good interpersonal skills and a sound general knowledge of IT and the Internet.

Your key responsibilities

  • Configuring, managing & maintaining SQL Servers across multiple product lifecycle environments, from development to mission-critical production
  • Set and Maintain database standards
  • Manage Database access
  • Supporting the development and delivery of SQL databases, SSIS packages, and other related processes, including performance testing, refactoring, and optimisation, across all environments
  • Contributing to the upgrade and modernisation programme of works, delivering Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery, Compliance, and ensuring best practices in SQL systems
  • Monitoring system health and performance, to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security
  • Regularly updating on progress and notifying of any major problems and/or issues in a timely manner
  • Sharing domain and technical expertise, providing technical mentorship and cross-training to team members and the wider IT services department
  • Taking ownership, investigating and resolving escalated tickets from the Service Desk and other support functions such as BI and Development.
  • Act as an escalation point for IT teams for internal and external client related support requests and incidents
  • Seek to resolve incidents and requests within agreed operating procedures and evaluate incidents for escalation should a resolution not be possible
  • Protect integrity of environments to ensure maximum stability and availability
  • Respond to raised issues within accordance to appropriate SLA’s and maintain accurate computerised records
  • Produce system baseline metrics and continually monitor performance and capacity in line with business and system requirements
  • Perform software releases and configuration changes in line with predefined procedures
  • Follow Incident, service request and change management procedures
  • Create, adhere to and maintain documentation
  • Liaise with third parties/suppliers/customers as appropriate
  • Enforce the Open GI IT policy in line with required governance/compliance
  • Perform any other duties that are reasonably required from time to time
  • Be able to work flexible hours in order to provide necessary levels of support cover
  • Availability for on-call duties where required

 

What you’ll need to succeed

Qualifications

· 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) and A levels, or equivalent

· Good SQL Server experience

· Strong experience working on High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR)

· Performance tuning and optimisation

· Microsoft or Linux certification (advantage)

· ITIL foundation would be an advantage

 

Experience

· Experience of providing support within a Service Desk or NOC environment

· SQL Database Administration – Microsoft and MySQL.

· SSRS Report writing.

· Power BI

· Knowledge of SQL server clustering would be an advantage.

· SSIS SQL integration services

· SSAS SQL Analysis Services (Cube tabula data)

· T-SQL Store procedures – writing and trouble shooting.

· Experience with Azure would be an advantage

· Strong experience of Internet applications, web sites and technologies

· Good knowledge of automated monitoring processes and incident management tools

· Knowledge of system administration best practices and patch management

· Understanding of system performance metrics and trend analysis and reporting

· Knowledge of remote desktop and VMware based solutions
